Affordable dog food gets Neville’s tick

Oamaru farmer Neville Hore has been trialing Fond Foods Chunky dog rolls on his team of 10 dogs for the past two months.

Fond Foods asked Neville to limit his dogs to 700g (one third of a roll) for his large huntaways and 500g for his smaller 30kg heading dogs.

He found that on average he was feeding his dogs 500-700 (one quarter to one third) of a roll each and all of his dogs under full working conditions were maintaining good condition, with excellent coats and high energy levels.

It was the first time Neville had fed all of his dogs on dog roll for any significant length of time and he found they were “as happy as hell” to eat it.

He says the roll was easy to feed and it didn’t need to be stored in the fridge.

“It can just be stored in a shed or a container and that’s one real plus.”

Chunky dog rolls have a complex high energy formulation (also 50% less water than wet dog rolls). Working dogs require much less of the product than other rolls currently on the market.

Chunkys biggest sticking point with farmers has been price and with their current pricing, working dogs can have a well-balanced diet with all the required vitamins and minerals including significant selenium for $1.80/ day.

This is not too much to pay for a product which is made from fresh meat daily and that meets all a working dog’s requirements.

Chunky is a semi-moist dog roll, which provides a healthy and nutritional diet containing selected prime NZ beef and lamb. Blended with selected grains, essential vitamins, minerals and garlic, this recipe is filled into its casing prior to cooking and this process seals in all the goodness and flavour.

“Buddy will arrive in store and, without any prompting, picks out his preferred variety of dog roll, SUPERIOR CHUNKY, and deposits it on the counter for scanning. He watches intently as we do our bit, tail wagging and then he carries his purchase out to the car” says Store Manager Judy Swenson. “Buddy is one of our favourite customers!”

Working on a dairy farm as a labourer, Buddy’s job requires a large amount of physical stamina. He enjoys walking the distances involved to bring the cows to the shed and moves them from paddock to paddock, when required. His treat for all this hard work is a drink of fresh milk when he arrives back at the shed.

Born and bred in Feilding, Buddy moved to Dannevirke as a young pup. Now four years old, he lives on a local dairy farm with his proud owners, Colin Terry and Judy Edmonds. He is often spotted shopping locally with his older brother Felix.

Buddy’s favourite pastimes include hunting and chasing rabbits, possums and rats. When not working, he can be found sprawled out in front of the fireplace in the lounge after a dinner of his favourite food – Superior Chunky Pet Food from RD1
